Initial request to develop a three year critical care strategy

Due to increasing volumes there is an inability to match resources to the needs of patients requiring critical care

Unable to match resources to patients in both CCCU & PICU is resulting in untimely care

Physically not much space left in CCCU & PICU to add more bed capacity

Developed a discrete event simulation model using historical data

Used simulation software prior to piloting to predict effectiveness of recommended solutions

Proposed the most cost effective solution which would reduce the average number of patients on a wait list to receive cardiac surgery
