Case Study #2 Critical Care Beds Availability

Program: Project: Critical Care Strategy Development

Problem(s)

  • Initial request to develop a three year critical care strategy

  • Due to increasing volumes there is an inability to match resources to the needs of patients requiring critical care

  • Unable to match resources to patients in both CCCU & PICU is resulting in untimely care

  • Physically not much space left in CCCU & PICU to add more bed capacity

Approach

  • Developed a discrete event simulation model using historical data

  • Used simulation software prior to piloting to predict effectiveness of recommended solutions

Outcomes

  • Proposed the most cost effective solution which would reduce the average number of patients on a wait list to receive cardiac surgery
